Considering geographical area, Kuwait has largest number of Masjids in the world. As per Ministry of Awqaf, Kuwait has 1695 Masjids in which Ahmadi Governorate has more number of Masjids.
The first Masjid in Kuwait was built in 1695 and it is situated in Souq Mubarakia named as ‘Bin Bahar’. It was built with bricks & clay and wooden roof. The Masjid Ibraheem – another name of the Masjid – reconstructed twice and latest structure is Fathimi Design.
The largest Masjid, called Majid Kabeer or Grand Mosque is situated in Kuwait City, nearby Saif Palace. With guidance of HH Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah, Grand Mosque completed in 1986 by spending 14 Million Kuwaiti Dinars. It has spread in an area of 45,000 Square Feet in which 25,000 Square Feet is under the roof. The famous Iraqi Architect Sheikh Mohamed Salih designed the Grand Mosque. The Masjid has a capacity to accommodate 11,000 worshippers at a time.
One of the most famous Masjid Shamlan built in 1922 is situated in a center point of four main roads in Kuwait. Even though the Masjid is small, it looks big because of structure with two minarets and big dome.
Masjid Fathima is situated in Dhahiya, Kuwait City and it’s attracted because of different structure. The Masjid has big dome without pillars.
